ISTJ - Quiet, Practical, Logical, Organized
Introvert - Sensing - Thinking - Judging
The ISTJ pattern tends to quiet, practical, logical and organized behavior. It finds success by being thorough, practical, realistic, responsible and dependable. Logic and orderliness are high priorities in all areas of life. This is the hall monitor pattern and is great for making tough logical decisions such as being an umpire.
They thrive in administrative and support roles. They are excellent time managers with a strong sense of right and wrong. They usually think in black and white terms. Efficiency (not necessarily effectiveness) and procedures are highly valued and they have a strong work ethic.
The introvert and thinking modes can give the impression of being cool, detached and aloof. Expression of emotion, sympathy and warmth are difficult. They perceive diplomacy as "beating around the bush" and consider it a waste of time.
They are intensely loyal and dutiful however and insist on self and others keeping commitments. Duty, obligations, traditional values and hard work are important concepts for this way of processing and seeing the world.
Most Developed Skill
The Introvert Sensing Thinking Judging pattern trusts facts and specifics above everything. This creates a very consistent, reliable, efficient and realistic orientation. They base their view of the world on what they see, hear, feel, taste and smell. They focus on and analyze impersonal facts.
This pattern creates consistency, reliability, efficiency, accuracy, attention to detail and pragmatism.
Strengths
This type is down to earth, traditional, decisive, organized and trustworthy. The strengths of this pattern combination lie in consistent, accurate, reliable dedication to work and family.
The ability to remember facts and details - the attention to detail and depth of focus and concentration can be valuable in many contexts. Personal loyalty and consideration creates harmonious relationships with others and encourages practical achievement.
Skills
ISTJ's dominant skill is managing sequential procedures or tasks. They do them with thoroughness, attention to detail and accuracy. They have excellent organizing and focusing skills. They persevere steadfastly to the achievement of goals. They are decisive and organized.
Weaknesses
Possible weaknesses in this Meta Program set can lead to rigid unchanging behavior. The Sensing Judging combination can lead to difficulty with embracing new ideas and change. Focusing on the details rather than the implications and the big picture can make long range planning difficult.
Rigidity and a lack of sensitivity to the consequences of decisions and policies on people can undermine effectiveness. They can be impatient with processes that take too long and with what they see as incompetence.
Stress Response
Under stress the ISTJ Meta Program set can result in unresponsive, perfectionist, stingy, sentimental, fussy, impulsive, unemotional, perfectionist or rigid behavior.
Typical Expression
They come across as calm unassuming, and careful. People would notice that they pay attention to the details of the situation and the conversation.
Values
ISTJs value precise analysis and clear thinking.
Needs
They prefer clear structure, explicit instructions and expectations. They need uninterrupted time to produce good solid work. They are more comfortable with procedures, structure and repetition.
Learning
The Sensing Judging combination learns best "traditionally". They like learning basic skills through repetition. They are less interested in implications, abstractions and theories. They prefer practical, procedural and rote skill development.
Least Developed Skills
The least developed Meta Program choice is extraverted intuition. When required to use intuition, the lack of skill can show itself as sinister, negative and unsupported interpretations of ordinary events.
The lack of development of this mode makes long range planning difficult. Learning real lessons from experience - being able to make connections between events and behaviors is challenging. Direct expression of feeling is unusual, and this mode has little experience with the power of emotion.
